ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a form of broadband connection where the downstream channel (data coming in to you) is much wider than the upstream (data you are sending). For the vast majority of applications this poses no problem whatsoever, and indeed this is the type of Internet connection the vast majority of businesses are best to use. Conversely, SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a form of broadband connection where the upstream and downstream channels are equal in size. If your business sends a lot of data to the Internet, this might be a better option, although it is more expensive and not yet available in all areas. We are of course happy to advise on the most suitable service for your business.
DSL services are supplied over a BT telephone line, most often sharing the fax line to save the expense of a dedicated circuit - whilst not affecting the usage of the fax line in any way whatsoever. Neonsky Systems can work with any Internet Service Proivder (ISP) to configure broadband access for your corporate network. If you have yet to purchase a broadband connection, we can recommend a list of ISPs whose services we have found to be reliable and whose technical support we have found to be helpful. Unlike the vast majority of companies providing technical services, we do not have links with any ISPs and choose to remain this way so we can give our clients genuinely impartial advice on the best broadband suppliers.
Another form of broadband access is a dedicated leased line to the Internet. Unlike DSL solutions, dedicated leased circuits are available with Service Level Agreements to ensure a minimum of downtime, and compensation should downtime occur. This form of connection should only really be considered in the most critical of applications, as the cost is extremely expensive, and DSL products are now mature products and generally extremely reliable.
Whoever your ISP, it is however crucial to have a working and agressively-configured hardware firewall to secure your network from the Internet. We can supply and configure a wide variety of firewalls depending on your requirements and budget. We work with equipment from all manufacturers including Cisco, Juniper, Sonicwall and Draytek.
